The Nod...

You know what I mean right? When you are out in public and you see one of our kind and you stare for a second to assess her style. Then you are walking past each other and then there is that silent and completely understood moment when you both nod at each other. At that very moment a whole slew of thoughts are silently conveyed.

"What a beautiful look on her."
"I wonder when she went natural."
"I love her length."
"I love her TWA (teeny weeny afro)."
"Where did she get those earrings? Headband? Scarf?"

And then without a word we smile and move on. Don't you just love that? Sometimes of course you just have to engage in a conversation especially if you really like what you see. I was once in a public convention center and passed another natural and she leaned over as she passed and said "Girl keep it goin'!" and I said "Mmhmm...you know?" And we both laughed and went our separate ways.

I love our little world here. It's safe and sacred.

What about you ladies....ever have a great run-in or nod off with another natural while out and about? Dish, dish...

Check My 'Fro!

First off look. at. this. My first blowdryer blowout.....ask me how many times did I sing "We're brothers....we're happy and we're singing and we're colored.....give me a HIGH FIVE!" whilst patting my hair. Anyone? Props to the first commenter who knows who I'm talking about... ;o)

This is the first (and definitely not only) time I've taken heat to my hair in the form of a med to med/high hairdryer with a comb attachment on it. I love how it turned out. This is the following morning after and with a bit of shrinkage but still at somewhat of it's max height. My husband was floored. He thought that I was wearing my shower cap or something and made me raise the lights in the room so he could see that what I was working with was INDEED real. Ha! Tonight I am going to wash it and check it out to make sure that my curls come back (praying here) because I have read that some women never get their curl pattern back the same way. But some have. I'm pretty sure that I will be one of the ones that get it back. I am having a flashback to a little over a year ago when I would take my blowdryer to my new growth to smooth it out between relaxers and eventually they would fight back and spring back into action and I would have to succumb to the relaxer. So here goes nothing and everything!

While I'm gone, check out this news anchor sharing her natural story with the world....it's nice to see women take bold steps even if it's not the "norm" in their surroundings.

My New Shampoo

New Posts Mondays.
New here? Start here...

Mill Creek Biotin Shampoo-Shampoos (16 oz)

Look at this little bottle. Now look at me. Back at the bottle. Back at me. My hair STILL looks wonderful! All due to this shampoo that I've been working with lately. And I am liking it alot...here's why:

1. The majority of the ingredients are pretty organic (we will talk about the UNsavory additives in a moment)
2. I can really feel a difference in my hair after I shampoo with this.

3. Okay...I guess I only really had 2 reasons that I like it....

I put it in my hair and really for me it's not a huge gigantic lather that I end up with but that's okay. I just need it to wash ya know? And when I say that it makes my hair squeaky clean I mean it - my hair actually squeaks afterwards when I run my hands through it. My hair is so loose afterwards too. You all know that I have a ton of curls atop my head and at times they can create this wall that nothing can penetrate. But this stuff smashed right through that glass ceiling. It makes for a nice hair experience afterwards.

Now the Cons....

Ingredients-wise we could do without a few of these.
  • Sodium Myreth Sulfate - can cause irritation in eyes. Trust me! I got just a bit in my left eye once and the kids thought I was purposely wearing my eye like that to play "Scare Tactics" with them or something.
  • Octyl Dimethyl PABA - this may cause allergic reactions, cancer, endocrine disruptions which can cause reproductive problems (but it was listed closer to the bottom, so I guess I'm trying to get by on that fact that they probably didn't put alot into it)
  • Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer - a possible carcinogen but "they" say the molecules are too large for absorption.
  • Potassium Sorbate - may irritate eyes.
  • Sodium Benzoate - usually found in food as a stabilizer it was taken out of Diet Cola in Britain. It's been linked to hyperactivity in children. When taken in large doses it can cause free radicals in the body that can cause serious illnesses.

But....

let's leave on a positive note. No use me being the one who completely ruins your week with nothing but bad news. Some good things about this shampoo.

  • Hydrolized Elastin - prevents premature loss of elasticity to skin (and I guess hair too because my hair is so bouncy and resilient after a wash)
  • Inositol - promotes healthy hair growth
  • Biotin - also promotes healthy hair growth (from Vitamin B)

So there you go folks. It has its minuses and pluses, you just have to decide if YOU want it. Honestly, I am missing my shampoo bars from Smell Goods Spa and I will most likely be going back to that after I am done with this bottle until I can find another shampoo that I want to try.

Have a great week all.

Fresh Twists...

Okay so I finally got some time to actually play with my hair. I'm babysitting and both my baby and the visiting one were taking a nap. I started to twist my hair up late last night but gave up because of arm fatigue and just sheer exhaustion. I used my Avo Whip Conditioner and 100% Shea Butter to twist it up.

I woke up and finished it this morning and here is the finished twist up:

I don't think it turned out bad at all. I am going to be wearing my scarf and let my leave-in conditioners do their thing. I will post the afternoon results after I take it down.

Where Has The Time Gone?

Wow...I can't believe I haven't been on here and said a word since June! What is my deal? It's just been a crazy life this year and this summer was no exception. My firstborn just started Kindergarten today and that is one momentous occasion. So I took the summer off this internet and spent with him. Time well spent most definitely.

My hair has been taking dips and detours here and there definitely this summer. It has grown alot and that I am super proud of. I started on a new shampoo that I'm not too sure if I like it or not. I am going to review it in a few days on here so stay tuned.

I'm also working on a video to post on here about my regimen. Although I was gone, I was still getting emails about all things hair and I want to address them as soon as I get the chance. I am working this week on some formulating of my conditioner, so I will keep you informed on that front.

Here is a latest photo update of the 'do:

Hope you are all having a great Monday and I hope your week goes well. Talk to you later.

Update...

Okay so I haven't been doing much with my hair lately and at the same time I've been trying different things here and there.

I did my first successful twist out on the hair and it looked F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S!! Sorry I forgot to take pictures of it, but next time I will most definitely get on that.

My hair has been growing so fast like it's got an appointment to keep! I am so thrilled at the growth and speed at which it's growing that it really is just flooring me. Today my fro after I picked it out was just Booming! My husband said "Wow that is some fro! Your flower looks like it's hiding in there..." I was wearing my usual flower clip and
when he said that I looked into the mirror and sure enough there it was looking like it was getting swallowed up into the rain forest... :oP

You know what I did this weekend?

SWAM IN THE OCEAN - HEAD FULLY IN!!! Gasp... I know right. It was my first swim in anything since my BC and honestly I still have some deep rooted relaxer habits to overcome. I still reach up to tuck my hair and primp it on a windy day - because I forget what I'm working with up there. Same thing when it came to the sea. I went in and stayed from the shoulders up dry for at least 5 minutes before I realized that I could be doing the Flipper and all that jazz without having to fret afterwards.

It was total freedom. And I loved every second of it.

Updated fro pic right here....

Only 5 months in! Look at that growth!

Oh No I Didn't!!!

Oh yes I did....

I cut my hair on my own, thinking I was slick and why pay a man 10 bucks to do something that I used to do all the time when my hair was still relaxed. But now that I'm natural (4 months in YAY!) I was feeling a little clipper happy I guess and saw a stray straight hair and went for it. Only to realize a moment too late that I also had chopped a large portion off the part in front of that little lone hair. I was devastated after I saw the end result.

Remedy: I now have learned how to scrunch, poof and prod my hair into spots that I want to cover up.

It all worked out in the end and I officially wore my first headband style tonight to my meeting for religion! Hay! Ohhh!!!

The proof is in the picture dearies......

Anatomy of a Fro...

Lately I've been checking out my hair and I'm growing more and more of a fondness for it as the days go by. I know now that it likes lots of moisture and it retains it and holds it inward like a greedy only child. It funny, some days I will completely douse it with oils and bomb it from every which direction and then by lunchtime I'll happen to glance into a mirror and it appears that my hair is bone dry. Only I'll run my fingers into the growth and it will come out as slick as that oil spill in the Gulf right now. (ummm....too soon to joke?)

So that's why I say that it really does hide the moisture that it retains. I have been using African Black soap from Smell Goods '98 that I spoke about in this post about my hair shampoo bar.

I am still on the hunt for a great headband. I am not at the point of a puff yet, but slowly but surely. I'm in no rush for it to grow up and skip steps of growth. I'm a mama, what can I say? ;o)

My New Norm...

Hi all! I have been just jumping through hoops lately doing things for an even my husband and I put together last weekend. Now it is finally over and done with and I sighed a good sigh as I sunk into this computer chair to compose my post.

Due to the fact that I have been running non-stop since basically the end of February sadly my hair has taken a hit. I am back on the wagon and treating myself and my daughters hair more kindly.

I am due for a serious trim and so is Little Miss. I see her ends are thirsty so today I am going to use some Avo Whip Conditioner and that always helps to revive her hair and her ends. I also am going to throw some Africa's Best Herbal Oils our way and watch our manes glisten in the sun.

This head of mine is due for a blowout. Now my definition of blowout might be different than your term. Blowout to me is when I take a pic and go to it up there and literally pic all of my fro out to a full on mane and then do the pat down. I love it, it shows me my growth instantly.

Here's a current non-blowout picture. Just my wash and go from this morning.

I'll post a blowout pic later this afternoon after I pick up Little Man from school. Then I'll pic it out and we'll both be surprised by the results I'm sure! For better or worse.... ;o)

2 Months and Counting...

So I'm 2 months post Big Chop and really liking how my hair has responded to its natural state. It is growing in nicely and when I really show it some love it really flourishes. I have been using my Bees Knee's Naturals Avo Whip Conditioner and it has really given my hair a whole different outlook :o) It is now more moisturized and softer to the touch and easier to comb and manage. All the way around it is nothing but supportive to the overall health of my hair.

I love that I am limiting more and more chemicals going into my system these days and my body is responding in kind by feeling better, lighter, and more "streamlined" shall I say?

One of these days soon I'm going to try a twist out again. Perhaps next weekend. I will have alot going on but still I will have some free time here and there to kill so why not play with my locks? :oP

2 Month Update Pic!

Bonus question of the moment: Where can I find cute headbands from independent sellers? I love to support fellow artisans of course, so let me know if you either sell them or have a regular that you always go to. Thanks ladies and gents!

Did My First Twist Out!

I did my first twist out and I love what it turned out to be! I am going to be posting a video hopefully by the end of the week. Only because I'm so sick still and everything is in slow-mo mode for me still.

I finally got a handle on the dishes though and I'm excited that I have enough growth to finally start fiddling around up there with different do's.

Bees Knee's Has Launched!

Hello ladies....

Today is a great day. Today is the day that you make the discovery of your new favorite conditioner. My Co. Bees Knee's Naturals is officially open and ready for your orders!!!

I'm so excited and you should be too. Why? Well because this conditioner is so superior in so many ways that you will never want to be without any. I'm here to accommodate your needs.

It's made with fresh and creamy avocado. Avocado has such a fierce hydrating effect on our hair that it's unbelievable. The first time I used this conditioner I was absolutely floored at how great my hair felt afterwards that I couldn't keep my hands out of my hair for the longest time. This was when I was still relaxed and wasn't yet natural. That was what worried me in the beginning after I went natural. I didn't think that it would work for my new hair texture.

It still worked wonders. It left my hair feeling so moist and it was so manageable. I was able to pic my hair out with hardly ever hearing a curl pop or wince. It was sailing through my type 4 hair like it was buttered pasta.

So now it's your turn to try it out.

For the month of March only, we are offering it at an introductory price of only $5.99! So this is your chance to get a bottle, test drive it, see if it's for you (I know it will be), and get it at a great price. Then get hooked on it, and the rest will play itself out! ;o)

Here's where you can find it ladies...and gentlemen!

My best,

Come On!

Okay so for the longest time I have been trying to figure out why my videos won't post on my blog. Still working on it, but in the meantime, why avoid this wonderful space?

So my hair is steadily growing. It's up to the size where I can do twists and achieve some kind of semblance that it's a grown up version of its former self.

I'm learning alot about how to accessorize my look from so many awesome women over on naturalsunshine.ning.com under my group Addicted to Earrings!! which is where I have probably met alot of you women following me now. So thank you.

It's been such an eye opening forum that I think I will start sharing some of my favorites with you guys. Sounds good doesn't it?

Also I've got some interesting news for you guys but it will be coming in a few weeks or so. You're gonna love it!

The rainy season seems to have started down South where I am and so I am finally enjoying the perk of not having to run from raindrops (unless I'm in a fly outfit! ;o) so that has been really nice. I keep on getting comments from people about how much this look suits me and I'm really fascinated with the whole way it has changed different parts of my life.

Still scared of what my papa will say when he finally sees it! I'll let you know how that works out for me... :o)

Other than all this...it's been a typical TWA kinda week. How bout you?

That's A Dealbreaker!

Okay so Saturday night my scalp was killing me - you all feel my pain right? So I knew that I was lacking some serious moisture in my doo mop so I went on the search for a good natural conditioner I could do at home. I make my own natural conditioner myself, but I had read somewhere recently that someone had used bananas and was happy with the end result there. So what do I do?

I whip up some banana conditioner....

I put that all up in my hair with an egg and then let it marinate for about 1/2 an hour with a bag over it. I take it off, hop in the shower and start to rub it out. After about 1/2 hour in the shower I get out and I'm drying my hair with the towel and seeing pretty large bits of banana coming out into the towel. I put on my glasses and walk over to the mirror just to see what looks like a bag of jiffy pop popcorn growing out of every which way in my fro! I freaked out and started combing it out. I thought I got the majority done away with, so I wrap my head up for the night and figure if there is anymore then I'll just get it in the morning. Mind you, I have a 8 o'clock wake up call on Sundays for my religious obligations. And two kids. And breakfast needed to get done, and exercise. So...who was I kidding?

Sure enough I woke up to my head still pretty full of banana and my husband going "You have like no time before we leave to finish getting dressed AND do your makeu........what's all that in your hair?" He comes over and then like something out of Animal Planet the papa ape comes over and starts to groom the mama ape of the banana in her hair! LOL! I thought it was just going to be easier because he is a whole head taller than me and can see the whole melon. After a minute he was like "Well that's the best I could do..."

What? Excuse me? I don't leave the house after he utters the words "that's the best I could do". It's at that point that my little son gets sick and pukes all over our hallway (just OUTSIDE the bathroom of course) and THAT'S when my plans of staying in all Sunday were basically made for me.....

Long story semi short....

Bananas? That's a deal breaker ladies!!!!!!! (at least for me)

Eureka!

I think I've got it! Remember my afro mullet dilemma? Well I think I've figured it out and have a solution now.

I put one of my smaller scarves around the back and tied at the front, THEN....I take a normal sized scarf and wrap it around to the back and put a knot at the back.

Double coverage!

It worked out. Now I just need to tweak it here and there, but I think I'm on my way folks!

Scarves - My Right Hand Women

Yep. I have alot of scarves. Had them since way back when. But I never used them on such a daily basis and they never really played such an integral part of my hair growth. Now I am using them on a regular basis and they are my best friend.

If it slips off in the night, I immediately wake up and redo it (sleepwrapping if you may) :oP and then fall right back to sleep.

These last few days, I have been backed up on some laundry and so I haven't been able to use my scarves lately. And now I'm realizing that I can never not have one handy. My hair is too fragile and needs to be protected at night. When I picked it out last night, more strands of hair than I've ever seen since my BC were coming out into the comb. Yikes! I realize now that I have to stay on top of it. Oh well. I am now officially high maintenance. LOL!

Business in the Front, But a Party in the Back!

Okay so I'm learning all sorts of new things that my hair likes and doesn't like as I'm going along. I know my hair likes to be covered and tucked away for the evening, so that it can perform as a cute little TWA the next day. I know that it looks good either with shrinkage or with a little volume. I love that I can inflate or deflate my hair just by wearing a scarf over it for a few hours.

However, I do NOT love the fact that lately as my hair has been growing out on all sides, it has not been cooperating in the back the following morning after I take said scarf off.

And I'm scared that if I don't get this under control and figure out a solution that I will end up looking like this in a few more months....

http://www.unstructed.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/afro-mullet/

HELP!!! How do I keep away the afro mullet I sport every morning? It's always a ridge in the back and I have to pic it out and rescarf my hair with the knot at my forehead instead of at the back of the neck like I wear it at night.

Tips please, tips...

I Know It's Attractive But....COME ON!

Okay so I am sitting in my house of worship Sunday morning just minding my own business when I look over and Lil Miss is looking up at me. She whispers "Mommy you look pretty." I say "thank you sweetie, now pay attention". She looks at me again and says "Let me look at you". So I take the opportunity (for shame) to do a quick hair check. I turn sideways and whisper "Is there anything in Mommys hair?" To which she looks into the matter and pulls out the BIGGEST LINTBALL EVER! I was mortified....

And it was sitting in my hair for at least a good hour and a half before Baby Girl saved her mama from herself!

So now I know what is next on the natural hair care product purchase list (a.k.a. NHCPPL)....

Single Sided Salon Style Hand Mirror

Yep. One of these deluxe see behind you like you're at the salon kind of mirrors! I can't walk around ignorant to what is lurking back there all day any longer. I live in this town and have to see people on a daily basis!!

Anybody have a great place I can find these at a reasonable price? Thanks y'all.

It Was All Just a Dream...

This morning I woke up so disappointed. Last night I had dreamt that all of my hair had grown in and they were big luxurious pronounced curls and all the work was done for me and the waiting for growth was over.

And then the alarm went off and I woke from that dream with a big THUD! back to reality and my t.w.a.

Have you ever had growth dreams only to wake up to not that much hair?

That's what I get for drinking coffee so late at night!

I Lost My Pick and My Mojo!

Okay so for the last few days, about 2 days, I have been just feeling blah....

I couldn't put my finger on it, I felt like I had food poisoning, I didn't want to see daylight, I was kinda irritable.

Then I realized what it was. I had lost my hair pick. I hadn't picked out my hair in 2 days and I think my body was sensing that something was off. It was my hair! It was lopsided to the left a bit too much and throwing me off center...

So today after the kiddies went down for naps, I tore through this house like I was looking for Jimmy Hoffa. And I found it! AAaaaaaa angels singing, enter risors filled with soprano singers...

Then I deep conditioned my hair for about 25 minutes, rinsed and picked it out into it's lovely little TWA glory.

I'm back. I feel much better and like myself again.

Thank you afro pick....

I'm New Here...Be Nice ;o)

Okay so it's been awhile in the making (see my profile story on the right) and I am finally on the other side of the fence. I'm no longer looking in on the party that was and is natural hair. I love it, I'm livin' it, I want more OF IT!

I am starting this blog so as to alleviate some pressure off my brain when it comes to all the things I want to say on my other natural blog about my natural hair and this new journey I've started on.

So here we are today, in this spot right now. I'm excited. My hair is growing and the sky is blue today. I feel alive and fresh....

This is gonna be good....really good....
